VAN ALLEN BUILDING
5th Avenue South & 2nd Street
The Van Allen Building was constructed as a department store during 1912-1914 by Louis Sullivan and had been commissioned by John D. Van Allen. Sullivan treated the first-floor sidewalk level as a wide-open space with large showcase windows and the building was designed around the selling floors. The exterior is made from brick, glass, terracotta and marble. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 7, 1976. It was once a landmark department store and is now the Van Allen Apartments. Most, but not all, of the apartments are income restricted.
